Nic-Lor floors offers wood flooring at great value
Wood floors have been around for centuries, but technological developments coupled with an environmentally conscious world have transformed what is available today from yesteryear. What is the definition of hardwood flooring? A product made from timber designed specifically for flooring either from a design perspective or a structural one. Today it is a popular flooring choice due to its durability, environmental attributes and restorability.
The “timber” or wood can come from trees considered domestic traditionals, domestic and international exotics. There is even bamboo which is considered an “exotic wood” but is a grass product that is very renewable and fast growing.

Types of hardwood floors
Finished and unfinished
Hardwood floors come prefinished at the factory and unfinished. The unfinished floors are finished during the installation process in your home. A benefit to purchasing prefinished flooring is that it can be manufacturer warrantied against scratches and dents up the lifetime of the wood! They can also be walked on immediately upon installation.
Solid and Engineered Flooring
Solid hardwood is a solid piece of wood usually between three-quarters of an inch and five-sixteenths of an inch thick. Solid hardwood can be installed on grade or above grade. Solids are available in both traditional and exotic species.
Engineered hardwood is compiled of very thin layers of composite material on top of which a veneer layer of the species is applied for the look desired. Engineered wood can be installed above grade, on grade or below grade with a “floating floor” installation.
Different species
Traditionals include cherry, walnut, maple and oak. Exotics include Brazilian Walnut and Cherry, Australian Cypress, Wenge and Santos Mahogany.
